Variations in Walnut
The beauty of wood lies in its variety, especially walnut. No two pieces of walnut are ever exactly the same, and that’s what makes it so special. If every board looked identical, your kitchen would feel manufactured instead of grown. Instead, walnut offers endless richness in tone, grain, and character.
At Kokeena, we embrace that variety while working to ensure your order is cohesive, beautiful, and uniquely yours.
What is a batch of veneer?
Walnut veneer is made by slicing thin sheets from the same tree. A “batch” refers to a group of these sheets that share consistent color and grain. By sourcing doors and panels from the same batch, we help your project look harmonious, almost as though it came from one tree.
Ordering samples from Kokeena
When you order a walnut sample from us, you’re seeing just one example of walnut. Each piece of wood is different, so your finished order may not look exactly like your sample. Instead, consider it a representation of the color, tone, and grain you can expect from walnut veneer.
-
Walnut is known for its depth and vibrancy. Depending on the tree, you may notice undertones of pink, red, brown, green, purple or even orange.
These subtle shifts add character and dimension, meaning no two pieces of walnut are ever alike. -
The difference between lighter and darker shades of walnut often comes from where the wood grew within the tree. If the tree is old growth, the inner tree, you’ll get darker, richer hues. Sapwood, the outer tree, will provide lighter, softer tones.
Together, these contrasts create the dynamic interplay of light and dark that walnut is so famous for. -
Grain patterns also reflect the age of the tree. Again, an old growth, inner tree produces a tight, fine grain. Sapwood, the outer tree, provides a “looser,” more open grain.
These natural variations bring movement and texture, giving walnut cabinetry its timeless visual interest. -
All walnut changes over time. With exposure to light and air, its deep brown tones gradually soften into a golden, honeyed warmth. This natural aging process is part of the wood’s charm, adding character to your kitchen as it matures. (Think cedar siding on classic coastal homes.)
-
Because walnut is a natural product, replacement doors or panels will typically come from a new batch of veneer. While every effort is made to provide a close match, it’s not possible to guarantee an exact duplicate of color or grain.
That’s part of the authenticity of real wood, and part of what makes every Kokeena kitchen unique.
